A French Volunteer of the War of Independence
Chevalier de Pontgibaud — The Chevalier de Pontgibaud was a teenage nobleman who escaped jail, enlisted, and crossed the Atlantic to fight alongside the Continental Army.
The Chevalier de Pontgibaud was a teenage nobleman who escaped jail, enlisted, and crossed the Atlantic to fight alongside the Continental Army. His memoir — first translated into English in 1897 and never republished since — gives a vivid, personal account of Yorktown, the naval war, and the character of the Founders as seen through foreign eyes. This is the first republication since that original translation.
