He was in Russia because it was where his work was, and he stayed through the revolution because leaving was not yet possible. His account of the systematic undermining of the Provisional Government, the assault on property rights, the theft and black markets, and the Bolsheviks' contempt for the Constituent Assembly is the testimony of an ordinary man caught in an extraordinary collapse. This edition includes a transcript of the author's talk upon returning to England, a publisher's foreword, and footnotes.
